The 1976 Presidential election between the tickets of Gerald Ford/Bob Dole and Jimmy Carter/Walter Mondale was the only one in United States history to feature two major candidates and two running mates who would all at some point gain their party's nomination for President but lose the election (Ford in '76, Carter in '80, Mondale in '84 and Dole in '96).
